Overall Concept

The LLM4CIP platform harnesses cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Large Language Models (LLMs), and digital twins, to revolutionise cybersecurity in critical infrastructure sectors.

By integrating LLMs’ ability to process and understand complex patterns across vast datasets, the LLM4CIP platform delivers advanced capabilities for identifying subtle or previously overlooked cybersecurity risks, insights that traditional methods may miss. It also introduces an LLM-assisted risk management framework that guides users in navigating and mitigating ongoing security threats. This intelligent support empowers both cybersecurity professionals and non-experts, including system administrators, to effectively manage and respond to complex cyberattacks with confidence and precision.

Moreover, the LLM4CIP platform is based on digital twin technology, a power that even enhances the way that critical infrastructure is managed, tested, and secured. The platform integrates agents that scan and map the entire required infrastructure and assist in creating a detailed model of the critical infrastructure.

The LLM4CIP platform also features a digital security orchestrator that enables dynamic simulations and impact analysis, with automated decision-making to ensure safety and responsiveness. A key component includes system behaviour analysis, such as profiling microservices and containers, to establish baseline operational patterns in containerised environments. This profiling generates time-series data that supports advanced AI-driven anomaly detection, helping to identify and mitigate potential security threats. Furthermore, the platform integrates a suite of AI/ML techniques, including a Reinforcement Learning (RL) module, to significantly enhance its penetration testing capabilities and adaptive threat response.

The LLM4CIP Platform Architecture

LLM4CIP features a multi-layered architecture designed to deliver real-time monitoring, adaptive testing, and automated mitigation strategies, ensuring continuous protection for critical infrastructures and essential services, including those covered under NIS2. The platform combines a user-friendly dashboard, real-time data collection, and a flexible experimentation environment to support comprehensive cybersecurity operations. Built on four core layers, LLM4CIP offers a holistic, future-ready solution tailored to address the evolving challenges of cybersecurity.

Dashboard layer with AI-driven orchestrator

The dashboard is the central control hub, allowing users to manage cybersecurity tasks through an intuitive interface. Powered by AI, it automates threat detection, risk assessment, and mitigation actions, while providing real-time monitoring and clear visual insights for quick, informed decisions.

AI-based data processing and analysis layer

This layer turns raw data into actionable insights using AI. It enables continuous monitoring, vulnerability detection, and adaptive threat analysis, while supporting compliance checks and safe attack simulations to strengthen cybersecurity resilience.

Data collection layer

This layer gathers real-time and historical data from networks, applications, and infrastructure to provide a complete view of system health and security. It ensures accurate monitoring and analysis by feeding clean, structured data into AI-driven tools for threat detection and risk assessment.

Experimentation environment layer

This layer provides a secure space for testing and validation. Users can either monitor and protect their live infrastructure or create digital twins to run safe simulations, penetration tests, and attack scenarios, helping improve resilience without impacting real systems.

LLM4CIP Methodology

The LLM4CIP project is structured into three primary stages
1
Needs Assessment

The first stage focuses on defining core requirements and system architecture through a user-centred approach. Stakeholders from NIS2 critical sectors are engaged to identify needs, map workflows, and analyse cybersecurity challenges. These insights guide feature design, performance goals, usability, and security requirements. Mock-ups and templates support specifications, and detailed test cases are developed to ensure reliability and robustness.

2
Design and Development

This stage focuses on turning requirements into a functional platform. It includes designing and developing the first version of LLM4CIP, which was tested in a controlled environment before deployment. Validation is embedded throughout development to ensure reliability, while close collaboration with end users through real-world workshops aligns the platform with practical needs.

3
Testing and Evaluation

In this stage, the system is released through Open Calls, inviting external participants to contribute. Development follows an iterative approach, using feedback from contributors to improve prototypes, foster knowledge exchange, and accelerate adoption of advanced practices.
